My industrial design hero’s are Camillo Olivetti (Olivetti Typrewriters) and Sir Alec Issigonis (Morris Motors Limited).
1950’s Singer 15K Treadle Sewing Machine
The machine was purchased from the son of the first and only owner, he shared its history and told me it how it was used by his late mother to produce uniforms during World War II in a warehouse then after the war taken home where she used it to produce clothing for both her children and grandchildren. The machine has been sympathetically restored to a fully functioning and highly aesthetic state.
The machine head was completely seized and the woodwork had deteriorated with a serious structural crack. The machine head was completely rebuilt, including sourcing and replacing original parts from the United Kingdom. The nearly complete original accessories set was comepleted including an original draw key. The woodwork was fully repaired and refinished to a new lustre. In keeping with the age and style of the machine the steel frame has only been cleaned as stripping and re-enamelling would have been out of touch visually with the whole piece.
1950’s Olivetti Studio 44 Typewriter
Purchased from a warehouse of retired typewriters, the history of this machine is unknown, in a seized state with many missing/broken linkages. Thankfully housed still in its original case in the chasis in a very good condition.
The trypwriter was stripped, rebuilt and replacement linkages manufactured. An original manual was sourced from America so the machine is complete and now fully functioning and in an almost “like new” condition.
My current renovation project, returning a Architecturally designed and now heritage listed Art Deco semi detached house in Ashfield to its original splendour. Filled with Art Deco stylings and motif’s of the period with most original fabric still in place albeit in a dilapidated condition. I have been researching the history of the land, the street, the owners and current structure all the way back to colonial times. You can learn more about it’s history and the features of the house here.
